When buying some transistors and diode etc, we use some part numbers like BC547, 1N914 etc to mention the component. These numbers are known as part number for electronic components.
Through this article, I like to introduce about some basic numbering schemes widely used in electronic components like transistors and diode.
Electronic component like transistors and diodes are designed and manufactured for different applications. Some components are used in high power applications like power amplifiers and some others are used in low power applications whose current consumption are critical. Also some components are specially designed for radio frequency applications.
When considering manufacturing of electronics components, there is a chance for different make of same component with same parameters from different manufactures. If each manufacture name there components, it will make confusion for product manufactures and designers.
So standardizing these component name is a better option for all. This avoid a large confusion and give a basic summery about electronics components.
Instead of standard names, component manufactures follow some internationally recognized numbering schemes for there electronic components. One is known as the Pro-electron scheme and was originated in Europe. The other is known as the JEDEC scheme and originated in the USA.
By looking at the transistor of diode type number, or code, to is possible to identify elements about it. The Pro-electron scheme makes it possible to broadly identify the capabilities of the transistor. For example parameters such as the transistor being intended for low frequency power, RF, etc can be determined.
The JEDEC system details far less, being intended to be purely a numbering system. From the number it can be determined how many PN junctions are in the device.
Example: The BC107 is a low power audio transistor and a BBY10 is variable capacitance diode for industrial or commercial use.
Example: A 1N914 is a diode and a 2N3866 is a transistor.
Both numbering schemes are widely used by component manufactures. But as stated above paragraphs, the Pro-electron transistor and diode numbering or coding system provides more information about the device, than the JEDEC system.
